Peter Banys, MD, MSc, is the Director of Substance Abuse Programs at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. He directs the VA/UCSF Substance Abuse Fellowship for Physicians. He has been involved with our program since its inception, and frequently speaks to trainees on medical issues related to drug abuse (Koch & Banys, 2001). He is one of the state leaders in the implementation of Proposition 36 (treatment rather than incarceration). He is a past president of the California Society of Addiction Medicine and a member of the Executive Board of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. We use him as a resource as faculty and trainees develop research on co-occurring disorders, treatment policy, and psychopharmacology. He is active in the NIDA-sponsored clinical research centers and since 2006, has been active in assisting Vietnam with the rollout of Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT).
